Wandsworth Community Transport is a registered charity providing specialist transport services across the Borough of Wandsworth for Community Groups and individuals with mobility problems. We think its a fantastic local charity that benefits some of our most vulnerable and isolated neighbours and we hope you join us in supporting its great work.
We asked them for some background on what they do and how they would use the money that we raise for them.
“We operate a door-to-door shopping shuttle/outings programme for elderly disabled people who live in Wandsworth. This service is a real lifeline for vulnerable, isolated local people and for many the only time they leave their home is when our minibus comes to collect them. The shopping shuttle is a fully integrated service, our vehicles collect passengers from their homes and take them to our Shopmobility unit in central Wandsworth where volunteers push wheelchairs, lend a guiding arm etc. This service enables housebound Wandsworth residents to do their own shopping and provides a chance to meet new friends. Our programme of outings is run on a similar basis, the day trips to the coast are particularly popular. Our passengers refer to these day trips as their “holiday”.
Any money raised from the Walk will be used to support our work in this area by, for example:
– Purchasing new wheelchairs or scooters for our passengers. Assisting in the recruitment and training of new volunteers to support the service.
– Outreach work to publicise our service with “hard to reach” elderly/disabled people.
– Expand and develop our programme of outings
Our main services are provided under contract with Wandsworth Borough Council. We also receive funding from The City Bridge Trust, Sainsburys, The Big Lottery, Awards for All, and many smaller contributions which we receive from all our many supporters and users.
